Forest of Arts (Hopkins Demonstration Forest)

Our family was invited to give a Tipi Living Demo at an outdoor arts festival, called Forest of Arts, this last weekend.  It was held at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest, outside of Portland, OR.  Along with showing how people can still live in tipis, with a direct relationship with the elements, my husband and I gave demonstrations of our own crafts as well.  I recreated my outdoor sewing work space and set up a hand-on display for Natural Dyeing, while Michael displayed his basket weaving and bow-making.  Fair Ophelia Designs creations were for sale, along with a few wild-crafted plant medicines.  It was a really great event and we would be happy to return next year!
We set up our family lodge one day before the festival began and welcomed many old friends into our home.  After living in Southern Oregon for more than a year and having many folks come and visit us, we had the pleasure of bringing our home to those unable to travel afar.
Tipi living in the Cascade region seems a bit unreasonable due to the wetness, but we survived the weekend.  There was only one short rain storm, but finding dry wood in a temperate rain forest is difficult, leading to smokier fires than normal.  Our bones were creaking from the cold moist air, yet the experience was rewarding.
It is strange to put your life on display, but I feel we opened many eyes to the possibility of how humans can live in a more direct and accountable way.  Many boy and girl scout troops were around and the whole family took turns helping them get some badges.  Fair and Whitman showed how to identify different trees and what those trees offered for food and medicine.  I did a short dyeing tutorial with sumac berries and iron and Michael talked about wild edibles and processing acorns.  Their eyes were bright and there smiles wide by the end of the visit with us.  We had many great conversations throughout the weekend and thank you to all those who supported us by taking home one of my many creations!!!

Sumac berries create a rosy beige, but when put in an iron after-bath it changes to a charcoal.

Wolf lichen, Oregon Grape root, and Onion skins create various yellows and light greens.

Visitors were fascinated with the spectrum of colors from natural dyeing and I told them this demo's colors were just the tip of the ice burg in the colors one can achieve!

Michael spent a lot of time welcoming people inside and letting them experience being on the ground around the fire.

We tried to make it as close to our normal setup.

Time with our loved ones!

A Glimpse of Fair Ophelia

I have been working on creating different vest patterns and they are turning out great!  Kids vests are happily eating up my fabric supply... shopping for more may be in order...  Also, half vests that make me feel fancy.  My vintage Singer is working great and my outdoor workspace is shady and cool during this insane heat wave.

Fair Ophelia Bags

people have been asking me what kinds of bags they can order, so here are a few examples of the fair ophelia bags...
pleated bag, this is the largest version, but i make them in various sizes

the pleated bag in use...in a very messy studio.

coffee sack messenger bag, sized for a laptop

small coffee messenger

shoulder coffee purse

i have done custom bags in other designs, but those are typically a one-time deal, unless requested.

i have been busy designing a coffee clutch purse, a unisex wallet, wristlets, and other goods for the Indie Valentine show.
off to work...

they both like it...

i just received this photo and was surprised to see the resemblence of the cats. i didn't even know Alexandra's cat was black... it makes the bag even better.

it's been a while...again...

i found out that the next semester does not start until the 21st of the month... i somehow thought that i only had a three week break... so i have been taking a lot of time making my own creations, along with the many custom orders. i feel like i am in constant need of more fabric, mainly browns and reds, but after organizing my solids...

i realized that there is more potential for bags than i thought. i just made two large pleated bags and posted them on my etsy. I also just finished an order from my manager, at The Vine

she gave me free range on the fabrics and i had fun using some of my "grandma" hand-me-alongs. I have been using a lot of the swatches given to me too. it's really the only way i would be able to make a bag out of designer fabrics.

we received a surprise phone call from our crazy portland friend james this morning, telling us that he would be dropping in tonight. yeah! he does this every year around Christmas, when he drives from portland to wiscousin and back... stopping to visit on his way home. another piece of portland, stabbing us in the heart... i just talked to another portland friend today and we reminisced about going out to breakfast. gourmet craziness for $7.00, served by a tattooed angry artist, feminist, musician. i really have not found anything comparable and as cheap, here in st. louis. we are missing you portland!
well, off to drink wine, eat stinky cheeses and home made pumpkin bread from a coffee can.

my studio

i recently moved my sewing studio from our mudroom to fair's room (her bed is now in the corner of our room). the garage is too cold for michael to paint in now that winter is upon the midwest and i offered up my studio to him. this meant moving into an area half the size and kid accessible. so i had to consider how to make it kid-friendly and not be a pain in the ass to function. i think that i did a good job and this has forced me to turn the scary basement room into a cutting and storage area. the basement is not that bad, it's just that no one has really done anything with it for the last ten years and i'm going through the last four tenants crap they left behind. I did find some treasures though... an antique sewing machine, a "fake" book for a million old country songs, and other unique and random goodies.

the studio...slightly organized

i'm planning a trip with my best friend, na-do, to go up to chicago for a weekend. this will be the first time i've been away from the family for more than a day in forever. but a lady has gots to get her girl time in and have some adventures. so anyone who wants a bag, ask me now... trips cost money. i plan on bringing bags with me to hock a few here and there. we'll see...

small pleated bags

i made a few new bags this week...

i free-motion machine stitched the above design. i love doing these, but they are time consuming.

one bag that i was tempted to sport myself.

i have a bunch of great fabric to make a lot of these bags and they are all have fall colors, so i'm going to be busy busy making bags over the next couple of days. i need to get them in stores soon for the holiday shopping madness.
